Nick was diagnosed in July of 2006 and resides in Aston, Pennsylvania. While Nick currently uses an insulin pump, we felt the need to share how our i-port® devices are always on hand. As with all technology there is always the risk of a malfunction, it is for this reason we are thankful to have the option to use the i-port® as our backup. Nick has been through a lot since he has been diagnosed and before he went on the insulin pump, the i-port® was a great alternative to multiple injections. It is easy to use and is equivalent to an infusion site injection. Nick is young and brave and the opportunity to use the i-port® in the event of his pump not working properly helps to keep him a happy, healthy, active boy. A special thanks to everyone at DuPont Hospital for introducing us to new ways to help children with type 1 diabetes.
We were first introduced to the i-port® when Nick was taking multiple daily injections. DuPont Hospital asked me to participate in a group study of a new device called the i-port®, and I was very excited. This device changed our lives tremendously. When we take a vacation from the pump or have a malfunction, we use the i-port®, and I am just so grateful not to have to poke his skin with multiple needles daily. It was difficult to control Nicholas' blood sugars due to the fact that he would not eat everything after giving him insulin or he enjoyed the challenge of eating food without me knowing--probably to avoid another needle! When we use the i-port®, I can give him some insulin before the meal and the remaining dose after he finishes as needed. I feel more comfortable checking his sugars more often knowing that if he needed more insulin it goes into the i-port® and not his skin. His blood sugar levels improved greatly, and without the constant skin punctures his skin looked so much better. One needle every three days is so much better than multiple needles daily.
There have been no complaints about inserting the i-port®. A technique to rub an ice cube on the intended port site was suggested and it works great. I believe there is also a numbing cream available by prescription to help eliminate any discomfort that young children may encounter. The durability of this device is outstanding. It lasts through baths, swim lessons, and even a little rough housing with the siblings!
Nicholas just turned six, and I am so proud of him. He has been faced with major challenges since he has been diagnosed, but thanks to the pump and the i-port®, Nicholas can be a happy boy with great blood sugar control. With the pump and the i-port® he has no limitations, and NO MORE MULTIPLE NEEDLES IN THE SKIN!!!!!!! I look forward to hearing about other family's lives that have been improved by this small device with such a huge impact!!!

KathyEdgewater, FLI was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago. I
came from a family with diabetes. Both my father and uncle had
it, and fortunately they both lived a long life with diabetes so
I knew that my diagnosis was not the worse thing that could
happen to me. |
